At UHSEU, we are organizing for ourselves:
____ We work hard and we all deserve a decent standard of living which includes regular across-the-board pay raises for everyone. Our Teachers Retirement System funds should be there for us when we need them. We have a real voice on the TRS Board with newly elected higher education trustee Philip Mullins, a long time TSEU activist at the University of Texas. We will lobby the legislature for full funding and will oppose political forces whose interests are not the same as active employees and retirees.
____ We’re pushing back against all attempts to exclude state university employees from legislative protections. During the past two legislative sessions, we’ve seen the destructive results of Senate Bill 1652 which took away protection from arbitrary reductions of leave provisions, and the denial of a 4% pay raise with a $100/month minimum granted to all state agency employees.
____ We seek to break down divisions between us as employees: divisions based on geography, race, job title, gender, age, sexual preference or disability. Our membership is open to all state university employees.

____ Our union gives us a united voice in the workplace as well as with legislative and regulatory bodies. We’re better able to care for our patients and teach our students when we have the power to take care of ourselves as well. We need a voice in crucial issues like staffing, infectious disease control, and safety which affect us and our patients and students.
____ As health care and research employees, we have a responsibility to be “at the table” during discussions about the current crisis in health care – we cannot afford to leave it to a few administrators and politicians.
____ Texas can do better. We rank 37th among the states in overall health, according to the United Health Foundation which assesses the overall healthiness of our nation in order to educate and optimize the health of individuals, families, and communities. We are 50th (dead last) in percentage of two-year-olds who are fully immunized, and, at 633 we’re well below the national average of 798 in the number of registered nurses per 100,000 of population.
____ State appropriations are not keeping up with the research, direct care & education needs of our institutions. We join along with advocacy groups to lobby for increased funding for state university health facilities.
____ We believe in our public institutions and are proud to be part of important efforts to make Texas a healthier place to live. We oppose privatization of services and will work to maintain and increase public funding & accountability for the crucial public needs we work to meet.
